Vivien Saunders – Lancaster University

Vivien is a Suffolk care leaver. She has been an outstanding student completing her GCSEs and A Levels in Suffolk, before going on to Lancaster University to study a joint degree in Music and English Literature. She then progressed to undertake a Masters course and won a scholarship at Lancaster University to do her PhD, which she is hoping to finish this year. Less than 5% of all children in care get to go to university and Vivien is the first care leaver Suffolk has had achieve to study at PhD level. Vivien is described as a determined and resilient young person, she has excelled and proven that with the right motivation, high standards can be achieved.

 

 

 

 

Shortlisted Finalists

 

Amber Harris – West Suffolk College

Amber is studying for a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at West Suffolk College. She is a committed and positive student, and has encouraged other young people to follow a creative education route. Her artwork is brave, innovative and challenging, and she has been accepted into Central St Martins, Chelsea and London College of Fashion Universities to study Textiles. She is described as wonderfully motivated to achieve and to help others achieve self-belief.

 

Geena Clark – Apprentice at Waveney District Council

Geena is on track to achieve full marks for her NVQ and BTEC, showing what a student can achieve as an apprentice in a working environment. She has taken responsibility for her own training and is ahead of her targets. Last year she won the Suffolk Coastal & Waveney District Council Staff Improvement Award, competing against older and long-standing members of staff having only been in the post for a few months. She has a positive can-do attitude, shows initiative and takes things in her stride.
